The 16th Annual Review Meeting of the AIMS Programme

AIMS Family gathered for the 16th Annual Review Meeting of the AIMS Programme in the Republic of Korea on 2-3 November 2022, graciously hosted by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Council for University Education.
The Annual Review Meeting is held annually among the member countries and provides the opportunity for AIMS stakeholders to gather, share updates, review progress and discuss the direction for AIMS. For the first time in over two years due to the pandemic, the Annual Review Meeting resumed face to face. Around 140 AIMS governments and university representatives from 60 member universities of 9 AIMS participating countries attended the 16th Annual Review Meeting.

Opening session
His Excellency Mr. OH Seok Hwan, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea, delivered the Opening Remarks. He supported diversified modes of exchange and university social responsibility activities as means to strengthen student exchange and partnerships in AIMS.
Mr. LEE Ki-Bong, Secretary-General of the Korean Council for University Education encouraged more regional collaboration and productive discussions to sustain AIMS’ growth.
Asst Prof Dr Romyen Kosaikanont, SEAMEO RIHED Centre Director, highlighted the importance of strengthening and enhancing students’ regional identity and belonging through the AIMS Programme.
The AIMS Letter of Intent, signed in 2019, reaffirmed the Programme’s intent to support student mobility, progress the harmonisation of higher education systems, promote the development of global citizens and contribute to the sustainable development in the Asian region and greater inclusivity through multilateral efforts.

Representatives from governments delivered country presentations and updates on AIMS, including information on the national policies related to student mobility, best practices and expectations and visions for AIMS

Breakout groups
3 breakout groups were held for governments, faculty members by disciplines and IROs.
The governments group agreed on the general future direction for AIMS to be more flexible, diversifying mobility and activities, focusing on student outcomes, exploring other possible funding sources for AIMS and contributing to the common space in higher education.
The faculty members explored future vision and exchanges in their disciplines, including the modes of mobility, recognition, innovative pedagogy, USR activities, and exploring university-industry collaboration, internship, and research.
The IROs group shared the recent changes to the student services systems which included the shift to online system; capacity building needs, including digital literacy and management skills; and advising on guidelines for the USR activities for AIMS students.
Developments in AIMS
The year 2022 saw the creation of Working Groups of AIMS, including on Research, Regional Orientation, and University Social Responsibility (USR).
- The AIMS Research Committee settled on the definitions on the modes of mobility for AIMS. Research is being carried out by the Technical Research Team and Sophia University to study the impacts and the way forward for AIMS in 2023.
- To enhance AIMS regional identity and visibility, AIMS Orientation Task Force and AIMS Alumni came up with AIMS’ new slogan “Exploring Asia, Embracing Diversity” and identified 3 AIMS Student characteristics as outcomes from their AIMS experiences: 1. Self-competence 2. Intercultural competency and 3. Regional and Global Awareness.
- AIMS USR Working Group is pursuing activities to encourage students’ contribution towards sustainable development and develop greater understanding and appreciation of the regional context as global citizens.
The SEA-EU Mobility Programme for Sustainable Development is in development, which will be a new innovative, interregional and interdisciplinary programme to co-create and explore new modes of mobility among the various stakeholders between Asia and Europe regions and contribute to sustainable development.

AIMS Family visited Yonsei University MIRAE Campus, to learn and exchange good practices on USR and explored ideas and opportunities to incorporate University Social Responsibility programmes in AIMS.
